CBC Sexual Assault Awareness Conversation
As part of Sexual Assault Awareness month, Coastal Bend College (CBC) will host a lecture on April 19th at 10:00 a.m. at the Gertrude R. Jones Auditorium of the Beeville Campus. Former CBC student Kristene Chapa will share her story of survival and will speak on sexual assault awareness. The event is free and open to the public.
In 2012, Chapa survived a sexual assault and attack on her life that claimed the life of her girlfriend. Despite overwhelmingly difficult odds, Chapa continues to recover and advocates for sexual assault and gun violence awareness. Her compelling story has gained national attention in addition to the local media outlets and has been featured on “Dateline”, “Investigation Discovery”, and “The View”.
A recent interview with documentary filmmaker Charlie Minn led to the upcoming film, “Left for Dead: The Kristene Chapa Story”. The movie, described as a survivor driven documentary, will focus on Chapa’s recovery and is scheduled to be released Fall 2022. Minn is currently premiering “Concert Crush”, a film about the Travis Scott concert tragedy that claimed the lives of nine people in Houston in 2021. Minn’s other works include productions with Lionsgate and Investigation Discovery.
Both Chapa and Minn will be present to discuss their upcoming project and highlight the importance of sexual assault awareness. For more information, please contact CBC Student Services at (361) 354-2300.
